A handful of successful small wineries makes their homes in rural central Missouri along the scenic bluffs of the Missouri River. The owners of Les Bourgeois Vineyards, located just off I-70 at Rocheport (centrally positioned between Kansas City and St. Louis), have spent the past two decades growing their business to become the third-largest wine producer in the state. What started out as a family hobby blossomed into a passion and a talent for producing unique, tantalizing blends.
Set aside a couple full hours to take in the entire Les Bourgeois experience. The winery tour details the history of the operation and provides an up-close look at the production facilities. A visit during the harvest (summer into early fall) is particularly interesting and interactive. Follow up a tour with wine tasting in the gift shop, where a knowledgeable member of the small staff describes how each flavor and vintage came to be. The extensive collection of sweet, semidry, white and red wines offers options for every palate and reasonable prices from $12 to $25 per bottle. Conclude with lunch or dinner at the on-site Blufftop Bistro, a delightful restaurant with a scenic view of the Missouri River.
Make sure you call ahead to reserve a spot for tours, tastings and meals. The winery and gift shop are open daily; Blufftop Bistro is closed Mondays.
