Cold Spring Inn lies deep within a hilly, winding pocket of land in Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine State Forest. The 89-acre spread is the home of Kari and Jerry, who took an old cabin in the woods and transformed it into a wonderful four-bedroom bed-and-breakfast. The original cabin, now totally renovated, contains two small rooms ($120-$150), which share a tiny bathroom. A spacious living-dining area and kitchen are open to all guests and are used by Kari and Jerry, too. A working greenhouse connects the original cabin to a two-story wing, which contains two spacious guest rooms ($200-$230) that feature whirlpool tubs and gas fireplaces. Both rooms share a living area with a table and chairs, wet bar, overstuffed chairs and computer. Each evening, Kari sets out wine and a gourmet cheese and cracker spread; sometimes Jerry offers samples of the latest wine or port from the couple's adjacent vineyard. Later, guests are usually presented with homemade fudge brownies. In the morning, the couple sets out coffee early and prepares a decadent breakfast, which usually starts with fresh-squeezed orange juice and may include items like a fruit and yogurt parfait coupled with waffles topped with hot brandy-caramelized pears, plus sausage or country bacon. You can enjoy breakfast in the greenhouse or outside, where colorful chickens gather in the morning to quickly nab any errant crumbs that drop on the ground. Don't feel badly about eating too much food when you're here. You can easily work off those calories. The property features hiking trails (which Jerry says are deer paths he merely "embellished"), a pond with rowboat, tennis court, horseshoes and even a golf hole. Jerry says if any guest can hit a hole in one on the first try (it's a 74-yard shot), the room is free. No one's been able to do it yet. In winter, you can borrow snowshoes, skates, skis or a toboggan and act like a kid again. At night, Jerry lights bonfires around the property, and you can snowshoe or ski from fire to fire. Although you're pretty far out in the country, there are several nice restaurants within a few minutes' drive. Which means that really, this place has it all.
