Millie's bills itself as a family-style bistro, but this modest moniker is only somewhat accurate. Formerly a restaurant in another less-inspiring incarnation, Millie's is a dynamic reinvention of Main Street dining. Owners Nancy and Brad Chambers, who also run Mackinac Island Carriage Tours next door, stripped the woodwork, changed the layout and embellished the pressed tin walls and ceiling. Anchored by a hardwood bar, the restaurant is cool and comfortable and a welcome oasis from the fudge-driven frenzy outside. Vintage Mackinac photos adorn the walls.Crisp, white table settings play nicely against the red-and-white napkins lining each neat basket in which the food is presented. Starters include simply amazing flash-fried green beans served Belgian-frites style in an iron cone. The Reuben, made with corned beef brined on site, is grilled perfectly. Ditto the club sandwich, built with just the right height of turkey, cheese, tomato and lettuce. In particular, Millie's is known for its chicken salad -- seasoned to perfection. Additionally, an innovative drinks menu and attentive service make Millie's a 10. Sandwiches from $6.
