We stumbled upon Prairie Inn not far from the National Music Museum. It's conveniently located on the west edge of the University of South Dakota's campus, which piqued our interest. After asking around, we were encouraged to check it out. However, we were also warned that the outside is going through a face-lift and not to base an opinion about the hotel solely on its appearance. Which is fair warning: The exterior lacked charm and was in dire need of landscaping. In addition, we noticed right away that the hotel was attached to a bar-bowling alley combo, leaving us wondering whether we'd be listening to bowling games all night. However, things improved inside. Though not exactly modern, our guest room was clean and spacious, with a comfortable bed, a pristine bathroom and a cozy sofa. Best of all, it was quiet. We couldn't hear the bar-bowling alley in our quarters. (The hall and lobby was another story.) In the morning, a small kitchen offered a traditional Continental breakfast. Rooms from $76 with free Wi-Fi.
