Downtown Vermillion's new cafe sounds like it's a coffee shop but it's closer to a full-service restaurant. Locals stop by at all hours for fresh coffee drinks and pastries; full-service breakfast, lunch and dinner; and gorgeous cakes. We stopped in for lunch, and found the cafe to be bright and clean, with plenty of seating. Our Monte Cristo sandwich ($6.99) was filled with ham and Gruyere cheese, dipped in an egg batter, grilled and served with raspberry dipping sauce. The bread had the crispness of perfectly cooked French toast and could have stood on its own without the sauce. But the raspberry sauce added a sweet brightness to the sandwich. Our side, an order of potatoes Brule ($2.99), had equal parts Gruyere, American, cheddar and Parmesan cheeses. The beverage menu offers a wide range of specialty coffee and other hot and cold drinks (including wine and beer). The signature Cafe Brule ($3.25) had a distinct combination of cappuccino, cinnamon syrup and raw sugar, torched right at our table for a brulee topping. Co-owner Monica Iverson also runs a wedding cake business from the kitchen, so of course the dessert menu is filled with her cake creations. The champagne cake ($3.99) featured raspberry sauce, real raspberries between the layers, and a not-too-sweet buttercream frosting. Superb.
