Editor's Review

A delightful mix of classy toys, gifts, books and souvenirs fills this woodsy-vintage-Michigan-theme shop in downtown Petoskey.
Quick! You're in downtown Petoskey, it's the last day of your vacation, and you need a souvenir. Where do you go? Anyone who has spent time here knows the answer is Grandpa Shorter's, a beloved gift shop in the heart of the gaslight district. The two-story store begs browsing with a colorful array of toys, books, jigsaw puzzles, home accessories and classic souvenirs (T-shirts!). Kids will enjoy pawing through vintage-style goodies like tin tops, kaleidoscopes, game books and wind-up toys. The area's signature Petoskey stones appear on knife handles and cheese slicers in a glass case, and a giant display of mugs, coasters, trays, clocks and framed art features bright blue maps of area lakes. Prices range from less than $20 to more than $300; there's definitely something for everyone. Grandpa Shorter's also has less gift-y items. There's a large display of Minnetonka moccasins, and the lower-level of the shop features North Woods-style home furnishings clearly selected with the lake-house set in mind. (Think pinecones and black bears.) "Midwest Living" readers have recommended this shop highly in the past -- and now we know why. It's a must-see if you're in Petoskey.
