The Waterfront Inn is one of the best waterfront bargains in the Straits and best for those willing to sacrifice frills for extra vacation cash.
If you can look past peeling paint, pockmarked doors and outdated decor, the Waterfront Inn is one of the best waterfront hotel bargains in Mackinaw City. Those who end up happiest with their stay come expecting a budget motel, not an inn, and look past the Spartan accommodations to the highlights: the expansive water view; fresh-baked cookies (oddly, served for breakfast); and clean, roomy, glassed-enclosed pool and hot tub area, complete with small waterfall that rains down atop swimmers. Sugarlike sand awaits on both the expansive beach area and at lake's bottom in the wide swimming area. The hotel has swings that face the water. And every evening, the hotel lines the beach with bonfires. From the lakefront rooms (worth the few extra dollars charged), you're close enough to water's edge to watch ferries leaving docks for Mackinac Island, and you can even catch a peek of the Mackinac Bridge -- though that requires sticking head out onto small balconies. Do obey the Don't Feed the Seagulls sign on your balcony, lest you feel transported to the Hitchcock movie, "The Birds." Rates are $99 for lakefront rooms on peak weekends and $59 midweeek.
