This fabulous, elegant French-inspired home and garden shop stands out among the fudge and T-shirt shops on Bridge Street in Charlevoix.
We have visited many (MANY) home, garden and gift shops, and few have charmed us quite so much as Maison and Jardin, a French-inspired boutique on Charlevoix's main drag, Bridge Street. Dishes, table linens, imported pasta, feminine clothes in breezy fabrics, candles, natural sponges, goat milk soap, fancy condiments, illustrated cookbooks -- all artfully arranged and beautifully lit in themed vignettes furnished with pieces as curlicue patio chairs and worn wood tables. Beyond the main room, a smaller space holds a to-die-for selection of elegant children's clothes, the kind of dresses that your toddler might wear just once, but you'll stash away between tissue paper to remember forever. Beyond that room, a glass-walled conservatory overlooks Round Lake and holds similarly gorgeous garden supplies and potted plants on vintage fixtures. (We loved the northern Michigan touch of an antique fruit-picking ladder, probably salvaged from a cherry orchard.) Even if you don't buy a thing -- we didn't -- it's an absolute treat to browse in this beautiful store.
