This five-story, atrium mall attracts shoppers to high-end stores and lunch spots in the ground level.
It's all about location, location, location in Chicago's pulsing downtown Theater District. That's what five-story Block 37 Shops at State and Randolph has going for it. As of summer 2011, 16 shops had opened in the sun-flooded atrium building decorated with overflowing planters and artsy mosaic benches. So far, high-end stores in the contemporary 278,000-square-foot complex include Zara, Anthropologie, Sephora, L&G Aveda Salon-Spa, Eileen Fisher, Steve Madden, L'Occitane en Provence, Godiva Chocolatier and Disney's new interactive concept store. Since the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, this Loop block bordered by State, Randolph, Dearborn and Washington streets has seen its fortunes ebb and flow. These days, the development (which gets its name from the city's original 58-block layout in 1830) draws shoppers looking for someplace new to go and office workers looking for lunch. The lower level's combination of grab-n-go and sit-down eateries connects to Chicago's Pedway underground tunnels, and to subway stops on the Red and Blue El lines. Sandwiches from Au Bon Pain or a rice dish from Simply Thalia satisfy. The LEED-certified building also has an underground garage. We hear a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant will open on the upper level, and plans for a luxury hotel and condos are in the works for this prime Loop location.
