This comfortably colorful coffee shop on Charlevoix's main drag is a pleasant spot to grab a casual breakfast or watch boats in the harbor.
On the morning we walked through the old-fashioned screen door at Sadie and Jake's, there were three tables occupied. A couple of guys chatted over coffee at one; study guides and notebooks covered the other. Turns out, the kid at the counter is a student at University of Michigan, and he's preparing for med school between customers. And the third table? Piled with newspapers for customers to grab if they need reading materials. That's the kind of place Sadie and Jake's is: comfortable, low-key and friendly. Artwork in a variety of media is on display all over the walls and on some tables: jewelry, paintings, prints and the like. Funky pillows beckon from couches for people who really want to settle in. Though nothing stands out on the menu, everything is fresh and prepared from scratch. Banana-strawberry smoothies taste just like the ones you'd make at home, and oatmeal is hot and hearty. The house brew is Zingerman's from Ann Arbor. If the weather is agreeable, snag a sidewalk table. Although traffic is heavy on Bridge Street, the people-watching is good, and in the morning, the sun glitters on Round Lake.
