Whether you come for your morning cup of joe or a good read, this humming bookstore-coffee shop in downtown Boyne City satisfies.
Boyne City is a pretty quiet town, which makes the morning hum at the bookstore Local Flavor stand out. One regular sits out front with a cup of coffee and the paper, his dog snoozing under his feet. Pull open the old-fashioned screen door, and inside, a group of middle-aged guys who come to Boyne City every year to camp stand chat around the coffee urns. Fresh off a morning jog, another woman ducks in for a quick browse and a coffee to go. Detect a theme? This Water Street business has been a bookstore for some time, but it closed suddenly and then reopened under new ownership in 2009. Among the updates: a new name and coffee service, which apparently was a really smart move: Everyone we saw in the store had a paper cup in hand. It's nothing fancy -- you serve yourself from thermal flasks and choices for pastries are limited -- but that doesn't matter. The brews are flavorful, and the atmosphere charming, with new and used books invitingly arranged on wood shelves. A special section at the front of the store focuses on Michigan authors and subjects, and the children's area in the back offers many titles we hadn't seen before. Fiction is helpfully categorized by topic (Western, historical, etc). Though it's not a cozy coffeehouse, a handful of tables invite lingering. A love for reading, for coffee and for community is clearly on display at Local Flavor, as appealing to visitors as it is to the regulars who've made this shop a part of their morning routine.
