A huge gallery of top-quality Michigan art and a cool lineup of events draw folks from neighboring towns to Boyne City's fledgling arts district.
Freshwater Studio is one of the best local art galleries we've seen in the Midwest, not just because of the quality of the work on display but also because of the creative energy spilling out the door and into the town of Boyne City. More than 100 Michigan artists are represented here, and the variety of media is impressive. You can buy an elaborately carved canopy bed for thousands of dollars or a CD from a local artist for just a few bucks. Paintings, wood boats, felted hats and bags, books, sculptures, pottery -- just about anything you can imagine is displayed artfully in a spacious gallery with dramatic black walls and exposed duct work. The gallery's scale is impressive enough, but look closely, and you'll see the quality is excellent, too. Not everything might be to your taste, but it's all well executed and fairly priced (which means that yes, some of it is quite expensive). What's cool, though, is that the gallery has become the hub of Boyne City's fledgling arts district, SoBo. Freshwater Studio also hosts evening concerts in winter, recruiting great indie musicians to headline lively concert-parties in the gallery. People bring their own seating or just mill around looking at art and listening to the music. It's BYOB, and there is light food available. Even better, the $20 ticket doubles as a coupon for discounted meals or shopping at other businesses in downtown Boyne City. Freshwater Studio has also initiated a new art festival in SoBo each June, with live music, street dancing and art for sale. Whether you come for a special event or just to browse the art, you won't be disappointed.
