Stock your vacation rental with gourmet goodies from this delightful deli-market that sells sandwiches, packaged goods, take-and-bake pizzas and pastries.
Open long enough to feel like a standby (seven years and counting), Lake Street Market hides a couple blocks off the main drag of Water Street in downtown Boyne City. Its red-clapboard exterior and handsome forest green trim give the look of a classic general store, but a grassy "front yard" with bright market umbrellas and crisp white cafe tables suggests something more contemporary awaits inside -- and indeed it does. Lake Street Market stocks a tempting array of wine, condiments and packaged-goods, many from Michigan companies, such as American Spoon Foods jam and Sander's ice cream toppings. A deli counter holds fresh meat and fish, plus take-and-bake pizzas, while a chalkboard lists a huge variety of sandwiches. At the back of the shop, a small bakery case holds luscious pecan bars, cookies, bagels and scones that sell out early in the day. (The scones, especially, have developed a cult following.) The atmosphere is cozy, with great music playing and throw rugs on the worn wood floors. Prices are on the high end (though not out of line for a gourmet shop in a touristy town), but for folks who want to put together a boating picnic or buy vacationworthy snacks for noshing in their condo rental, Lake Street Market can't be beat. (And be sure to check online for special events such as hot sauce tastings and bagel-baking classes.)
