It's not luxurious, but this hotel is probably the nicest spot to stay in Valentine, which draws visitors primarily for tubing and kayaking on the Niobrara National Scenic River. Rates start at $95 and the setting stays fairly quiet; the younger party crowd is more apt to camp or book cheaper lodging.
Decor mixes lodge style and chain-hotel neutrality (the location was formerly a Holiday Inn Express). Room amenities include whirlpool tubs, sitting areas with sofa beds, microwaves, fridges and coffeemakers. The indoor pool and whirlpool are good places to relax after a day spent on the road or on the river. For guests who somehow haven't gotten enough exercise in this outdoorsy town, a small workout room is clean and well equipped.
The pleasantly surprising breakfast included in the room rate is a notch above what you’d expect to find at most chain lodging. Omelets and biscuits and gravy are among the buffet choices. The location is excellent if you plan to rent tubes, kayaks or canoes across the street at Graham Canoe Outfitters. There’s also a nearby grocery store for stocking up on supplies, and the Peppermill Restaurant and Lodge offers a quality, sit-down meal just a few blocks up the road.
