Editor's Review

Authentic Mexican food and an inviting atmosphere make dining fun at this family-friendly spot in Omaha's thriving Latino district.

The house specialty Parrillada Isla del Farallon is truly a sight to behold at El Dorado, a seafood-centric Mexican restaurant in Omaha's 24th Street Latino District. Breaded shrimp, bacon-wrapped shrimp, crab legs, clams, oysters, fish filets, plantains, green onions, octopus, fish broth and abalone seem to cascade down the gleaming silver tiers; warm tortillas, rice and two sauces also accompany the massive platter. At least two people in your group have to sign on to order this dish at $15.99 each, and diners should still expect to be stuffed and ask for a doggie bag by the end of the meal.

If that sounds a little too intimidating, customers can choose from among 50 other traditional Mexican dishes. Deciding what to choose can be a little overwhelming, but the bilingual menu has photos and friendly servers are happy to offer recommendations. The enchiladas ($7.99) and burritos should satisfy nonseafood fans. Most of the traditional meals cost less than $10; the seafood plates are just a little more.

El Dorado is family-friendly, and kiddos are sure to enjoy the mishmash of kitschy decor. Walls are adorned with taxidermied fish, light-up waterfall photos and a TV broadcasting Spanish soap operas. It's not fancy, but the food is good and the atmosphere fun and authentic.
