You'll get an exceptional location, comfortable room and lackluster service at this downtown high-rise.
It probably doesn't help the Millennium Hotel's cause that the night before, we stayed in a hotel known around the world for its exceptional service. But, still. Travelers often are willing to overlook physical problems with a hotel (such as the two garbage cans in the lobby collecting water leaking from the roof) when the service is good. We pulled up to valet-park our car ($22/night), and the bellman was missing in action. We walked through the lobby and reached the check-in desk, only to have the clerk barely lift her eyes before she asked for our last name. When she asked whether we preferred a low floor or a high floor among the 872 rooms in the 31-story tower, we said it didn't matter, and she finally looked up and said, "What, are you tired or something?" We ended up on the 22nd floor, overlooking the Ohio River. Our room was spacious, with a comfortable king bed, all-white linens and duvet, and a small bath. We were able to access the Internet on the first try, and if you join the hotel's loyalty program, you get free access (otherwise, you'll pay $7.95 a night). The one negative: It clearly at one time had been a smoking room, and the hotel, which was built in 1968 and is smoke-free now, has tried to cover up that smell with an abundance of air freshener. It wasn't bad enough to make us go back down 22 floors to ask for another room, but a renovation would certainly help that problem. You pay for the location here--it's a five-minute walk to Fountain Square and a 15-minute walk to the Great American Ballpark, Paul Brown Stadium and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Rates from $143.
