Open in 2011, this top-secret foodie paradise is a sister restaurant to chef Greg Hardesty's popular Recess.
Room 4 doesn't have a phone number, a website or even a sign, but that hasn't kept Indianapolis foodies from flocking to this standout restaurant. Opened by chef Greg Hardesty in June 2011, the restaurant -- Hardesty's fourth, thus the name -- offers a tiny menu that changes daily and emphasizes seasonal produce, local meats and fresh seafood. Room 4 is tucked away in a side room at Recess, but the sister restaurants are very different. At Recess, diners are served a fixed four-course meal, and you have to have reservations. Room 4, which doesn't even accept reservations, offers a less-expensive a la carte menu with three or four appetizers and three or four entrees. Leave room for the signature dessert: warm, scrumptious Candy Bar Cookies served with fresh whipped cream. (Don't even try to order something from the Recess menu in here; the two entities are kept strictly separate.) On our last visit, we devoured starters like Salad Pretending to be the One from Olive Garden ($8) and zucchini, mushroom and Swiss chard quesadillas with chipotle salsa ($10). For our main courses, we tried the Panamanian triple tail snapper, served with crme fraiche, pickled onions and the best roasted beets we've ever eaten ($18), plus the decadent Un-Patty Melt topped with pickles and caramelized onions. With such wonderful dishes, it's almost a shame that the menu changes daily.
