West Point Market doesn't look like much from the outside. Frankly, the first time we pulled into the parking lot we thought, "This is it?" It's a squat, brown, nondescript building. But that just makes what's inside an even more surprising treat. This unassuming grocery store is celebrating its 75th anniversary throughout 2011, and a walk through the 12,000-square-foot space reveals why. Visitors enter through the wine shop. Bigger than many stand-alone wine shops we've encountered, the section is arranged by region and staffed with an expert ready to answer any questions. Wine, naturally, leads to cheese, and West Point features its own cheese counter. If you'd rather browse, a cooler at least 15 feet long offers free samples and small cards with tasting notes posted amid a sea of veiny blues and aged cheddars. The market goes on and on, with a keen eye for detail at every turn. Prices are high, but so is quality. Entire racks are devoted to single products: a type of cracker, a variety of chocolate. Tough choices must be made: Linger in the bakery, deciding which Killer Brownie is most worth blowing the diet for, or beeline for the candy counter with its ridiculously priced bonbons? Choose one of the eight soups and chilis up for grabs in the cafe, or wait for a freshly tossed salad? Blow your budget on the kitchen gadgets or the home accessories in Temptations At the Point, a mini store within a store? There's one question, though, that's easy to answer. Will you spend more money than you intended? Yes, you will.
