This old-school, blue-plate-special-style diner also delivers memorable made-to-order doughnuts.
Diners go to The Depot American Diner for its blue plate specials, but we stayed for the made-to-order doughnuts. Featured on "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," this Zagat-rated, no-frills diner will exceed any and all diner-food expectations. Sink into a red leather booth or grab a circular barstool at the counter and take in the old-school eatery, complete with vintage photos and a blue plate special for each day of the week. We went straight for dessert, falling head over heels for the hush puppy-size doughnut holes ($4.41) encrusted with cinnamon-sugar and dusted with powdered sugar. The dense, cakelike balls have a satisfying coarseness to their texture, and toe the line between sweet and sugar overload. Any more sugar, and they would have been over-the-top, especially once we dunked the delightful doughnuts into the accompanying bowl of rich mocha sauce and whipped cream. The coffee flavor added just the right amount of bitterness to the warm chocolate dip, and the whipped cream added a cloudlike whimsy to the combo. This out-of-the way diner, located in the Austin neighborhood on Chicago's west side, isn't in the best location -- we would avoid the area at night -- but it's well worth a breakfast (or lunch) visit.
