Midwest Living Recommends
This steakhouse just west of Mandan may seem expensive for the area, but the meat gets an A+ for both quality and flavor.
Roby's is what a North Dakota rancher would think of as a perfect fancy restaurant. Pickups line the parking lot. Cows graze in nearby pastures. A full-body mount of a mountain lion greets guests when they walk in. Country music plays in the bar area. Rural prints adorn the walls. Tables in the dim, wood-paneled dining room are set with white tablecloths and votive candles. And steak is the undisputed star of the show. Roby's devotes an entire menu page to explaining why they serve the very best beef and take such pride in their steaks. All entrees are served with salad, vegetable, baked potato and a roll, but people don't come to Roby's for the sides. Luscious steaks are perfectly seared with a salty seasoned crust contrasting a warm, juicy interior. If you don't like steak, try the barbecue ribs, seasoned with a dry rub and applewood smoke. Rich, meaty morsels practically fall off the bone. The tab at the end of the meal is a bit higher than folks are used to seeing in rural North Dakota, with most steaks running more than $25, but Roby's serves top-quality meat with great flavor, making a visit worth the trip.
