When you're in the mood for an honest-to-goodness, all-beef burger, O'Connell's Pub -- a St. Louis classic for more than 50 years -- has you covered.
Tucked in the Shaw neighborhood, just a stone's throw from St. Louis' Forest Park and Missouri Botanical Gardens, is a 50-year-old establishment that's serves up no-nonsense, thick, juicy patties in an old-style brick tavern. O'Connell Pub's is a favorite among locals, who voted it No. 1 in the 2011 "St. Louis Magazine" search for the best burger in St. Louis. Don't expect a large menu. Burgers are what they do best, and they'll let you know it. (However, if you must deviate, there's a range of hot and cold sandwiches.) Prices range from $5.25 for a plain burger to $5.75 for a cheeseburger -- only American and Swiss are options. While you wait for your food, check out the restaurant's interior, including original bronze chandeliers from the 1904 World's Fair, antique memorabilia and old photographs. By the time you're done, you'll be staring down a 9-ounce, all-beef patty cooked just how you want it. It arrives on toasted sesame-seed bun upon a no-frills paper plate, flanked by a thick slice of onion and a pickle wedge. All burgers are served sans lettuce and tomato, something the owners feel aren't up to their standards in this region for quality and freshness. The burger, on the other hand, is way up there as far as taste, flavor and tenderness. Don't even waste your time with the fries. You'll want to save all the room you have for the main dish.
