Sandwiches with a Shakespeare theme and made with local, seasonal ingredients take centerstage at this cafe/bakehouse in the heart of historic Lake Mills.
If you like a little Shakespeare with your lunch or dinner, Water House Foods Cafe and Bakehouse in Lake Mills' downtown historic district is the perfect place. Owners Rae and Shawn Rediske are ex-theater folks, so the sandwich list includes the Othello, Romeo, Ophelia and Desdemona -- all made with Wisconsin cheeses and seasonal ingredients. We thoroughly enjoyed both sandwiches we sampled. The Juliet features smoked turkey, honey mustard, provolone, cranberry sauce on cranberry-walnut wheat ($7.25/$3.85 half); the Bottom is a gorgeous open-face concoction with snap peas, radish, lettuce, red pepper and goat cheese topped with a mustard vinaigrette on seedy multigrain bread ($6.25). The restaurant is bright and comfortable. A chipped brick wall displays the work of a local artist. Leather chairs, dining and display tables, and a coffee bar fill the attractive space. That pleasant vibe complements the Rediskes' mission. Water House started as a wholesale business at the local farmers market, transitioned to a bakery offering cinnamon rolls, scones and artisan breads. They then added sandwiches, espresso, beer, wine and music, as well as "extracurriculars" such as nonprofit fund-raising and community events, healthy eating, and baking classes and book clubs. But food is, of course, the focus, and they do it very well.
