The cookie jar is always full at this comfortably furnished turn-of-the-century inn located near a lake, bike path, golf course, and downtown shops and restaurants.
It's easy to relax in the warm ambience of the Sweet Autumn Inn, a turn-of-the-century Arts and Crafts-style bed-and-breakfastwell appointed with comfortable couches and chairs to snuggle up and read in, fireplaces to gather around, period antiques to admire and a really delicious home-cooked breakfast. Three distinctive guest rooms, from $99, include the Everson, named after the builder and original owner, and the Inman and West rooms, all with private baths and tastefully decorated with antique furniture and accessories as well as fireplaces. Noise-sensitive visitors should note that there is a fair amount of traffic on Main Street, but we weren't bothered by it once we shut our windows and turned on the air-conditioner. Located near the Glacial Drumlin Bike Trail, Rock Lake and Aztalan State Park in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, the B&B is east of Madison and west of Milwaukee in scenic Jefferson County. You can bike or hike the trail, swim or boat on the lake, play a round of golf, visit the historic shopping district, stroll around Commons Park in the town center, or just relax with a book in front of the fireplace or on the veranda. Built in 1910 by the prominent Everson family, the house was converted to a B&B by owners Teri and Steve Nelson in 2000. With its built-in oak cabinetry, natural woodwork and original fireplaces, it is a tasteful, comfortable place to hide for a weekend. And Terri is an excellent cook! Come hungry for homemade cobblers on weekend afternoons and generous breakfasts served on Depression glass dishes. On our visit we feasted on a North Woods omelet made with sausage, wild rice, portobello mushrooms and cheese; it was accompanied by garden-fresh asparagus, lemon-raspberry muffins, chocolate-hazelnut Danish, fruit-and-yogurt cups, and toast. Who needs lunch when breakfast is so fabulous?
