Besides traditional Italian food, Pirro's Restaurante in Woodstock has a cozy wine bar and scoops delicious gelato.
Family-owned Pirro's Ristaurante, located just off Woodstock's historic square, keeps traditions alive. The Italian restaurant serves Italian-American cuisine based on family recipes, including a wonderfully creamy house-made gelato. Housed in a former 1897 department store, its owners took the time to restore the original stamped-tin ceiling and wide-planked pine wood floors. They also added a cozy wine bar in the back room, serving 100 wines, mostly from Italy. (Bottles start at $22; wines by the glass, $5 to $9.) No cover charge for live music on weekends. For lunch, split the large salads and a sandwich with a friend. We like the Italiano chop salad with mozzarella cheese and antipasti tidbits (olives, garbanzo beans, peppers ...) drizzled with roasted-tomato vinaigrette dressing, $9. The loaded veggie panini on homemade focaccia bread came with fries, $8, and was decent. There's also a pasta lunch special: Pick your favorite noodle and one of four homemade sauces for $7. Sandwiches and salads are repeated on the larger dinner menu, which also offers veal, salmon and filet entrees for $14 to $25. Forever popular is the create-your-own-pizza option, with 40 toppings to choose from (a large goes for $14 to $20). Stop in anytime for the house-made gelato, $2.50 to $4.50 a scoop. A dozen flavors or more are always displayed in the glass case. We drooled over chocolate chip mint, raspberry, chocolate bananas Foster, vanilla walnut, coconut, white chocolate and chocolate hazelnut. All are thick, rich, creamy and truly wonderful.
