Bottle 12 Wine Bar brings a much-welcome touch of sophistication to downtown Bonner Springs.
Given the empty storefronts in downtown Bonner Springs, you'd think anyone opening a business here would go above and beyond to ensure success, but on the evening we visited Bottle 12 Wine Bar, we waited 25 minutes past the advertised opening hour (5 p.m.) for the owner to show up and unlock the door! Fortunately, our experience made up for the dubious start to the evening. Clustered armchairs, richly painted walls, a jazzy soundtrack and attractive wall art make Bottle 12 a stylish spot to sip a glass or share a bottle with friends. The restaurant's name refers to the 12 vintages you might sample on a given night; the lineup changes regularly and might include a crisp California chardonnay, a smooth Argentinian Malbec or a complex Sangiovese blend. Besides wine, Bottle 12 serves a tempting array of tapas-style fare such as shrimp rolls, bacon-wrapped scallops or beef skewers served with homemade Argentinian chimichurri sauce. We loved the earthy wild mushroom filo purses and savory beef empanada, as well as the luscious blue-veined queso cabrales, an imported Spanish cheese. Bottle 12 is only open to the public Wednesday through Saturday, but it is available for private bookings and also hosts educational classes on topics such as wine-tasting to vodka. Winemakers also make frequent visits here.
