Tours of this small craft brewery are given on Saturdays; free tastings are available whenever the brewery store is open.
The enthusiasm the owners of Half Acre have for craft beer is infectious. Catch it at 1 p.m. on Saturdays, when $10 tours of the brewery are offered, which include a Half Acre glass and beer tasting. Tours are first-come, first-served, and only 60 visitors are admitted, so it's wise to arrive early. People line up outside on Lincoln Avenue and often some are turned away. The brewing process is explained on a walkthrough of the small brewery floor. They describe mashing, fermenting and canning processes. Half Acre is the only craft brewery in Chicago that cans its own product, 300 cases a day. Even if you can't make a tour, it's fun to stop by the store (open Tuesday-Sunday) for free tastings, which the brewery encourages. In the tasting room, three beers are available year-round: Daisy Cutter, a pale ale in the West Coast style; Over Ale, a brown beer; and Goassamer Golden Ale, with subtle flavor and aroma. About a dozen specialty beers are available seasonally, including ales, stouts and bocks. Half Acre Beer Company was launched by a group of beer-loving friends in 2006 and has been brewing craft beers in-house since February 2009. Production is limited; beers are found in restaurants and liquor stores primarily in Chicago's north and northwest neighborhoods and suburbs. Beer can be purchased at the tasting center in cans or half-gallon growlers ($16 for the initial growler purchase and fill, $12 for a refill).
