Zesto offers a hearty helping of nostalgia, but the food is really only OK.
The Zesto Drive-In franchise (akin to a Dairy Queen) is nostalgically linked in Omaha to the College World Series experience. It's probably those sentimental memories of hot days at the ball field, more than actual culinary taste, that made the cheeseburgers here so popular. The claim of "best cheeseburgers in town" sounds good, but isn't supported by the food. We ordered a cheeseburger ($5.75), fries, Diet Pepsi and a chocolate milkshake, and it was just ... OK for fast food. On par with a Burger King or Runza stop. The chocolate shake was fine, but certainly nothing special. This Zesto location (there are other Zestos scattered throughout Nebraska) has other typical fried fast-food options, like chicken strips, on the menu written on cardboard. Shakes, ice cream cones and Arctics (ice cream blended with candy) are among the dessert offerings. Now that the College World Series has moved -- to the new downtown TD Ameritrade Park location -- customer traffic will determine if this location near Rosenblatt Stadium remains open. Peeling paint on the picnic tables and the timeworn appearance of the building make it appear that little investment is being made in upkeep. The proximity of the Henry Doorly Zoo may help maintain customers. A newly constructed Zesto is planned on property near the new stadium. That location may prosper, in part due to nostalgia and in part because drive-thru fast-food is scarce downtown.
