This quirky restaurant-bar on the north end of Kangaroo Lake in Door County has one of those everybody-knows-your-name atmospheres. Don't let the saloonlike exterior turn you off; friendly service and tasty twists on traditional fare will win you over inside. The bar, with mostly padded stools, runs much of the narrow length. Boards and chicken wire separate wood tables along the outside wall "booths." A few larger tables at one end give a view of the deck and lake. There are probably 30 brews in bottles and about 10 on tap, from Guinness to Fat Tire, but a martini is not an unusual order here. If you like onion rings, check out the "heaping loaf" of thin, delicately french fried strands that practically melt in your mouth. (Warning: They are HIGHLY addictive!) The all-you-can-eat Friday night fish fry isn't the typical perch but a sweet, lightly breaded, deep-fried grouper for $13.95. Other offerings include a tasty grilled portobella with spinach, swiss and rosemary mayo on rye for $8.95 and barbeque baby back ribs for $14.95 a half rack. A reader suggested this local gem to us, and we're glad to spread the word. It's a great find.
