Tinseltown kitsch outfits this southwest suburban strip mall movie palace serving full meals during blockbuster film showings.
Silver screen kitsch stars at Hollywood Blvd. Cinema in southwest suburban Woodridge (25 miles from the Loop). This strip mall movie palace's lobby (with bar) re-creates L.A.'s Grauman's Chinese Theater, with antique carved Oriental woodwork, giant Buddahs, classic movie posters and film-set memorabilia. Patrons stroll along the gold star stepping-stone walkway engraved with (what else?) celluloid celebrities' names. The walkway leads to 10 screens, each decorated with a cinematic theme, such as "Casablanca" Kasbah streets, iconic tinsel town sites or the Oscars. During the show, attentive waiters stealthily rove the aisles, delivering giant popcorn buckets, cocktails and full meals. The huge menu reads like a film's ongoing credits, including hefty burgers, pizzas, entree salads and sandwiches ($8 to $12) plus shakes, wine and beer starting at $4. Movie-goers sit in plump chairman of the board/CEO-style conference room chairs with high backs and padded arms that tuck under a banquette stretching along each tiered row. Theaters show current films. However, cult film "Rocky Horror Picture Show" plays at midnight every Saturday, and some of the original Munchkin actors show up for the annual "Wizard of Oz" screening every November. Tickets are $8 general admission, $6 for children, seniors and matinees.
