This no-frills neighborhood hangout has the best burger value in town but doesn't welcome kiddos or credit cards.
In business since 1918, Working Man's Friend is one of Indy's best-kept secrets: a casual, no-frills bar serving cheap, delicious food. The house specialty is hamburgers, with patties of ground chuck smashed on the flattop for a thin, uneven patty with crispy edges and a thicker, juicier center. They're always served well done and piping hot, with traditional toppings like lettuce, tomato and onion. At just $4.95, the double cheeseburger with a side item is a steal. There's no paper menu here: The options are listed on a concession-stand menu board, and they include classics like chili, grilled chicken sandwiches, hot ham on rye, pork tenderloin sandwiches and smoked sausage. Side items include onion rings (recommended) and fries (definitely not recommended). Working Man's Friend has a loyal following in Indianapolis, but it's not for everyone. Smoking is still allowed here (there's even a cigarette machine by the door), and it's in a near-Westside neighborhood that doesn't get much tourist traffic. You must be 21 to enter, and you must be prepared to pay in cash. If you can overlook those hurdles, you'll be rewarded with the best burger value in Naptown.
