The name and general vibe at Louie M's are fantastic, but their burgers are lackluster.
Louie M's is the kind of place where you look around and realize that your fellow diners have been here many times before. They barely glance at the menu and the waitresses know them. That menu includes breakfast choices like homemade cinnamon rolls, Italian steak and eggs with peppers, and lox-style salmon and bagels. Among the burger options are chili burgers, jalapeno-cheddar burgers and feta burgers. Don't plan on stopping by for dinner, because Louie M's is open for breakfast and lunch only. Our server was friendly and our food arrived quickly. We tried the Guacamole Bacon Burger with cheddar cheese ($6.69) and an Egg-N-Burger ($5.69), which was topped with a fried egg. Both were served hot, cooked to our liking and required two hands to eat. The ground beef didn't seem as well seasoned or juicy as what we expected (and with a name including the words "burger lust," the expectations are pretty high). The burgers were well-topped but not spectacular. The cafe's location in south Omaha is an easy drive from downtown and the Henry Doorly Zoo. The historic neighborhood feels neglected, although Latino restaurants and stores do a steady business along the nearby 24th Street corridor. The exterior is a little boring, but the two-room interior is cool. It includes a diner counter, wooden booths, exposed-brick walls, exposed ductwork, and black-and-white checked floors. The walls hold a mix of vintage advertising signs, local history pieces and neon accents.
