Midwest Living Recommends
Lovers of time-worn dives, old neighborhoods and juicy, classic burgers will love Dinker's drool-worthy offerings.
The sign outside Dinker's says Omaha's Best Burgers, and when we looked at the very unimpressive, interstate-facing building, we thought "Yeah, right." The decor inside was as unimpressive as the exterior, somewhat reminiscent of a 1970s bowling alley. But now that we've tried the burgers, we fully support the sign's claim. The popular Haystack Burger ($5.95) combines a quarter-pound of freshly cooked, hand-pressed, choice ground beef with American cheese, honey-smoked ham and free-range fried egg all on a Kaiser bun. You may swoon when you bite into it: It's moist (without being greasy) and well-seasoned. Other twists on the classic burger include Western and buffalo-style versions. A simple bacon cheeseburger ($5.25) is equally swoon-worthy. You won't want to miss the homemade, buttermilk-battered onion rings ($2.50 a basket). The fries, however, are simply OK. Dinker's doesn't accept credit cards, so be prepared with cash. Also, get ready for the oddity of paying for food and drinks in two separate spots. But when you sink your teeth into your burger, such minor inconveniences won't seem important.
