Editor's Review

At this retro English pub, value-conscious Detroiters can nosh on succulent bar burgers until 2 a.m.
On Detroit's east side, the three-decades old Irish Coffee has single-handedly battled Detroit-area recession by serving a ground round for the current price of $ 3.95. For a dollar more, customers can add fries and a beer. Now that is a deal. The Irish Coffee is conveniently located on a busy thoroughfare between the oldest sailing store in Detroit and the Grosse Pointe post office. While it's been around for a long time, the Irish Coffee flies under the dining-out radar. The cozy pub doesn't advertise, and its bustling business is largely word of mouth. Inside it's reminiscent of an English pub, with dark wood paneling and green leather banquettes. Naturally, there are TVs for sporting events and requisite Miller Lite signs; it is a bar, after all. However, it provides an unheard of value for fairly good quality burgers, and that is why it has endured. Our burgers arrive medium-rare (just as we asked!), with caramelized onions distributed judiciously over the meat and nicely melted Swiss cheese, on a just-toasted sesame seed bun. Slices of dill pickle lay alongside perfectly browned fries. That first bite tells us it's a handmade hamburger rather than one from a Costco freezer bag. Yum. Another selling point? Irish Coffee is open until 2 a.m., which means that night owls who still want to watch a game, grab a cold one or have a really late dinner are in luck.
