The old-fashioned variety store concept has evolved into a fun, sophisticated shopping experience in downtown Fargo.
We'd heard about Zandbroz Variety store before we ever arrived in Fargo -- a friend of ours had been at its sister location in Sioux Falls, South Dakota -- but we still didn't expect the fun balance of sophistication and whimsy we saw as soon as we walked through the door. A display of hurricane glasses sat perched on a shelf, each with a pretty pastel pillar candle inside -- each nestled on a bed of Lucky Charms, complete with the cereal's perky marshmallows. Fun! We also love any shop that dedicates a display table to classics that these days are mostly relegated to high school reading lists: Machiavelli's "The Prince," Dante's "Infero," Alcott's "Little Women" and the like. The shop roughly divides into two parts: a bookstore celebrating local writers, staff picks and literature, and a general store carrying plenty of gift items like candles, lotions, handmade tableware, artwork, handmade jewelry, purses and more. Vignettes celebrate the seasons and play up lots of bright colors -- during our spring visit, pink and light green dominated. You could spend over an hour here and not see it all, and other Fargo business owners credit Zandbroz for coming in and showing that businesses could be successful downtown again.
