This uberpopular sports bar in the heart of Milwaukee serves char-grilled burgers that pair perfectly with cold suds.
Longtime fav, Major Goolsby's in downtown Milwaukee sits in a prime location across from the U.S. Cellular Arena and the Bradley Center, affording a ready supply of sports fans, to whom it caters to with 45 high-definition TVs tuned into any number of sporting events plus a wealth of sports memorabilia on the walls. Although its reputation is as a sports bar ("Sports Illustrated" rated it America's fourth-best), not a burger joint, the burgers have always been popular. With good reason. The beef patties are more than a half-pound each, flame-broiled, then topped with typical items like cheese and bacon, although there is an innovative "ham and cheeseburger" on the menu, which is just what it sounds like: a cheeseburger topped with several slices of ham. Pickles are served on the side, and tomato, lettuce and onion are offered. A basic burger is $5.95, making it a pretty good value. Other menu selections include hot dogs, brats, fish, and sandwiches such as turkey, chicken and ham and cheese. The appetizers are a tad more innovative: soup, chili and wings, but also mini tacos, a "bag o' peanuts" and Goolsby's Famous State Fair Brat Shots, which consist of sauerkraut topped with a hunk of bratwurst and served in shot glasses. And while Goolsby's is a sports bar, kids aren't overlooked; they can order SpaghettiO's, Smucker's Deep-Fried PBJ or a Minor Cheeseburger. The only downside? It's crowded on game days, especially when the Marquette Warriors play. Of course depending on your personality, maybe that's a bonus.
