Grab a handful of napkins before you bite into a Blue Moon burger; they're big, thick and more than a little juicy.
Nothing about the Blue Moon screams that they're got some of the best burgers you'll find. The bar and grill, which sits a half-mile or so from the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, is tucked into a squat, drab building. Inside, there are some decorations that play on the Blue Moon name, but nothing touting its burgers, even though the place is known as burger heaven among locals. The two-story building features a small bar on the main floor and a two-tiered upper level with views of the ground floor below. A wealth of TVs means it's a good place to gather when the Badgers are playing. The menu includes six burgers, one titled Best Burger in Town, the most exotic being the Spanish Burger, which comes with pico de gallo, pepperjack cheese and black olives. There are also several chicken breast sandwiches, plus a smattering of other offerings: hot dogs, BLTs, grilled cheese, two salads and lots of fried appetizers. But you're here for burgers, so order one. We ordered the Best Burger in Town medium-rare. It arrived more rare -- pink to red in the center and cool inside. However, the burger was wonderful, in large part because it was so thick and juicy. If you're not into "just the meat," splurge for a few extra toppings. Burgers are served with pickle slices, and onions (fried or raw) are available for free; everything else is extra. While the sides are all solid picks, the cheese curds are especially good, hot, stretchy and delicious. Prices are fair: $5.50 for the Best Burger in Town on up to $7.50 for the bacon cheeseburger.
