Off-the-beaten path Burton is a picturesque and surprisingly lively village.
You won't find any stoplights in Burton, Ohio, and the village doesn't even have a McDonald's, let alone a Wal-Mart. But don't make the mistake of assuming that Burton is just a sleepy country hamlet. Its 1,500 residents love having company, and because Burton hosts numerous shows, festivals and fairs throughout the year, they know all about showing visitors a good time. Anytime you go, you'll probably find something fun to do; the little village's remarkably long calendar of events includes spring and fall antiques shows, arts and crafts fairs, a bluegrass and folk music festival, a juried art show, an ox roast, and the annual county fair. Tucked among the rolling hills of rural Geauga County about 40 miles east of Cleveland, Burton is probably best known as Pancake Town USA because of the villagers' tradition of holding marathon pancake and maple syrup breakfasts on Sunday mornings during the March sugaring season. Geauga County is prime sugar maple country, and the Log Cabin on Burton's village square is a unique sugar house where you can buy locally made maple syrup, maple candies and other maple treats year-round. At the north end of the square, you might rub shoulders with Amish folks shopping in Burton's quaint one-block-long downtown, and at the south end, you can tour Century Village, a living history museum where you can learn about the New Englanders who not only founded Burton in 1798, but also established its rich architectural heritage and inviting, step-back-in-time ambience.
