Common wisdom has it that where there's good microbrews, there's good food. And that tenet certainly holds true at Barley's Brewing Company in Columbus' trendy Short North. The beer here is original (Blood Orange Wheat), bold (Russian Imperial Stout) and smooth (MacLenny's Scottish Ale). Prices for a pint range from $4.75 up. And the food's pretty special, too, especially the burgers. Several variations are on the menu, or you can build your own. We sampled the Bob Barley, a grilled burger infused with jerk spices and topped with Jamaican relish (a red pepper chutney, sweet but zesty), pepper Jack cheese and ale-washed fried onion strings ($9.98 including a side). It had the taste of a burger right off the backyard grill. The toppings were zesty and bright with the great onion straws adding lots of crunch. You can choose from a number of side dishes, from the standard (crispy fries or steak fries) to the unusual (black beans and rice or pierogis). A wide range of appetizers, sandwiches, salads and dinner entrees are also available, many incorporating beer as an ingredient. Barley's location across the street from the convention center makes for an interesting mix of customers; you may encounter body builders, cosmetics saleswomen, or cheerleaders and their families. The centuries-old storefront housing Barley's lends it an air of casual comfort with well-worn wood floors, a tin ceiling and vintage beer posters lining the walls.
