You want killer burgers in a classic roadhouse atmosphere? You want Lewie's.
Look up "roadhouse" in the dictionary, and you'll get something like Lewie's, which sits on a highway just outside Lead near the Mickelson Trail, the Terry Peak ski area and the gambling town of Deadwood. The wooden building offers several front decks tailored to drinking beer on summer nights, and the whole structure almost disappears behind various vinyl banners welcoming snowmobilers, bikers, hunters or whatever other thirsty group happens to be in town. The bar inside is packed with local memorabilia, including old chain saws, a mining cart, mounted game animals, 36 TVs and thousands of bottle caps. The quieter dining room has tables all crafted from a single, but enormous, local tree. Locals told us we'd find the Black Hills' best burger here (and it's affordable, around $7), and Lewie's didn't disappoint. It may come in a plastic basket with onion rings from the freezer, but the huge handmade burger was moist, cooked just right and served on a toasted bun. The taste of the burger is beefy and real. Just like Lewie's.
