Bison burgers, beer and bar games dominate at this local favorite.
The Buffalo House Restaurant is a cozy bar and restaurant providing a myriad of food choices, but specializes in bison burgers. The restaurant sits between a campground and ball fields, making it a popular summer spot for bar leagues and families living just south of Duluth. The atmosphere is casual: lots of North-Woods-lodge decor on the restaurant side and televisions and bar games on the bar side. The menu is lengthy, serving a variety of American favorites such as hearty sandwiches, all-you-can-eat fish on Fridays, greasy appetizers and, of course, lots of burgers. Burgers come in two varieties: beef or bison (for a $1.50 more). We tried one of each, and preferred the beef -- it was juicier. The bison was tasty, but slightly overcooked and dry as a result. Sides include soup, salad, fries or onion rings. Both the waffle fries and the home-style fries were hot, crispy and lightly salted to perfection. Other menu favorites include the charbroiled whisky steak and the Prairie Broasted Chicken. Buffalo House opens at 11 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends. Burgers are all under $10.
