This funky neighborhood spot has an extensive but inexpensive menu that can be hit-or-miss.
This Lakewood restaurant is known for serving local food at unbeatable prices, and a big portion of its something-for-everyone menu is the burgers section. The entire menu at 56 West has a coy, romantic vibe "flirty burgers" and "sexy sandwiches" are the focus. With eight specialty burgers (from $6 to $8.56), plus a build-your-own burger menu, there should be a burger for every mood and budget. All burgers are made from grass-fed Ohio beef. These burgers are good, but they won't knock your socks off. Unless you see a specialty burger that sounds just right, stick with the build-your-own menu. For a twist, trade the traditional bun for a baguette. Don't bank on the housemade condiments; their taste doesn't stand up to the traditional versions. We tried both a specialty burger, the Superfine, and a basic blue cheese burger. The Superfine is an "applesmoked bacon wrapped burger [with] caramelized onions, sherried mushrooms and 56 Green Goddess sauce." These ingredients all sounded great but nothing stood out when we actually tasted it. The blue cheese burger was made with buttermilk bleu, which proved too creamy and mild to stand up to the meat. The burgers were under-done (the medium-rare was actually rare and the medium came out too pink as well). Burgers come with a pickle, but anything else will cost you. Add fries for $1.56, or order full orders of sides for $2-$4. We tried three sides: Fresh Fries, Sweet and Desirable Fries (sweet potato fries) and Mnage a Trois Pomme Frommage (cheesy potato casserole). Unless you like really sweet, sweet potato fries, stick with the tastier hand-cut french fries.
