You'll find homemade baked goods, furniture and amazing granola at this Mennonite store.
Caution: The atmosphere is so warm and welcoming at The Home Place, you'll want to spend hours browsing the fine collection of hand-crafted Amish furniture and trying to decide what homemade breads, pies, cakes or cookies you want to take home. Located near the junction of US-68 and State-125, The Home Place reflects the genial personalities of Delbert and Susan Schlabach, a Mennonite couple who own and operate the large and neat-as-a-pin store with help of their children. Although The Home Place carries groceries and has a deli with a Amish-style meats and cheese, it has no shopping carts. Instead, customers just pick up a woven wood basket and troll the aisles for hard-to-find items like roll butter and old-fashioned horehound candy. The baked goods are superb and made fresh every day except Sunday, when The Home Place is closed, in the in-house bakery. Susan faithfully follows recipes handed down by her mother's family to produce her rich and creamy peanut pie and a tempting assortment of double crust fruit pies. Although the big and chewy molasses cookies are dipped in vanilla frosting and the flavorful blackberry jam cake is a local favorite, the store's most popular specialty item is Susan's Tried and True Granola. A combination of oatmeal, coconut and almonds, it comes in three different varieties, including maple-flavor regular, reduced sugar and Triple Treat, which is liberally laced with white chocolate and cranberries.
