Editor's Review

Wisconsin's bitterly cold winter's create a unique opportunity to drive on the world's largest freshwater lake.
The Bayfield County Ice Road runs from Bayfield, Wisconsin, to Madeline Island, Wisconsin. The catch -- the official highway runs on top of the world's largest freshwater lake, Lake Superior. For most of the year, visitors and residents of Madeline Island rely on boats, the daily ferry or a windsled to visit the island. But, come February or so, the ice gets thick enough to allow compact cars to make the journey across ice. A series of Christmas trees lines the temporary, multilane highway to and from Madeline Island, ensuring drivers stay on-course. The drive takes about 10 minutes. Once on the island, your entertainment options are limited. There are quite a few tourist shops in the summer, but by winter most are shut down. However, consider snowshoeing along Lake Superior in Big Bay State Park, eating at one of the few local bars and restaurants that are open, or driving around the island to see some of the multimillion dollar homes lining the shoreline. Or just enjoy the return trip on the famous ice road!
