The ubiquitous Cincinnati chili gets a hearty Greek twist at this Blue Ash diner with an expansive yet inexpensive menu.
Cincinnatians take their chili seriously. And Blue Ash Chili is one of their favorites. Here, chili tops everything from your breakfast omelet to a noodleless lasagna. Or just be traditional and order the chili over spaghetti in "ways" numbered two through six (a six-way will top your pasta with chili, cheese, onions, beans and fried jalapeno caps, priced from $3.49 to 5.75). The meaty chili has a thick, gravylike texture with strong flavors of cinnamon and nutmeg, reflecting the heritage of the Greek owners who opened the chili parlor in 1969. Generous helpings of chili and lacy tendrils of sharp cheddar cheese cover the diminutive hot dogs almost hidden in a soft, doughy bun ($1.60). Half- or quarter-pound burgers also come smothered in the redolent chili (from $3.09). If deli-style sandwiches are more to your liking, Blue Ash Chili is also the home of the double-decker. We sampled the turkey and bacon double-decker piled high between three slices of grilled white bread with lettuce, tomato and mayo ($6.25). One of us chose the dainty route of knife and fork to eat this behemoth, while the other made messy work of the ultimately more efficient hand-to-mouth method. Full bar service is available; the beer list often includes local microbrews. Blue Ash Chili serves breakfast, lunch and dinner Mondays through Saturdays.
