Everything about The Attic seems like it ought to have been a slam-dunk destination. It's in a charming historic building along Madison's Main Street. It's been around since 1972, selling gifts, offering custom framing, brewing up fresh coffee and selling slices of pie. It's locally owned, and we love to support local businesses.Several people had told us to be sure to stop in for the caramel apple pie and said it was the best in town. So we stopped and grabbed a cup of coffee as well. We'll admit, we like our apple pie with a buttery, flaky crust and with a filling that is more apples than sugary glaze. With that in mind, this pie did not deliver. Rather than having caramel drizzled over the top, the pie has a thick blanket of sugary icing that you could peel off, on top of a crust. And the filling inside was a mushy, unflavorful goo. We love pie, and we could not bring ourselves to eat more than two bites of it. Maybe we hit it on an off day, or maybe we would have liked one of the other half-dozen or so available that day, but we certainly would skip the signature dish if we ever went back.
