Editor's Review

Attractive gardens complement this historic stone building in downtown Madison.

The setting alone is worth a visit to this historic property in downtown Madison. The owners say the building dates to the late 1700s, when pioneers would stop here for shelter. The red-stone building exudes resilience. The Ohio River has sloshed up over its banks many times during the past 200-plus years, sometimes wiping out most of the town, but this building has survived, thanks in great part to its 24-inch-thick stone walls. For much of its life, the building was a place for commerce (including a brothel). It opened as a winery in 1994; today, Lanthier offers 16 wines year-round and three seasonal holiday wines. An initial round of tastings are free, and some of the most popular wines are the Strawberry Blush, the Mill Street Red and the Blackberry Social (all sweet wines). Sweet wines are popular with Midwest patrons, but Lanthier also offers four dry white wines and five semisweet wines. Prices are $16.82 per bottle. We tried an array of wines here and ended up taking home a bottle of the Strawberry Blush. The vintner recommended it with grilled chicken, and we agree that was a fine pairing.
