Once a town best known for its Italian population, Highwood is becoming a destination spot for restaurants and shopping.
This is a town in transition, as it slowly moves from its Italian roots and creates a niche as a dining and shopping destination. While Highwood will probably never rival its neighbor Highland Park, this small village of just 5,800 boasts a cute downtown district of about four blocks with a handful of stores selling women's clothing, antiques, consignment designer labels and baked goods. But its rising reputation is built mainly on restaurants, which include French (Froggy's French Cafe, Miramar), Indian (Curry Hut), Irish (Bridie McKenna's), Mexican (La Casa de Isaac), nouveau American (Sage Grille) and, of course, Italian (Gabriel's, Bertucci's Italian Steakhouse, Nite 'N Gale). If you have time, take a run by the Highwood Bocce Club, one of only a few such venues in the country. While you have to be a member to play, knock on the door and see if they'll let you in because it's just as fun to watch.
