This general store combines a hardware store with a soda fountain and an Italian market. Somehow, the combo works.
Parker's General Store in Richmond, Indiana, is a rare find: a place where you can buy nuts and bolts, a root beer float, and an Italian sausage sandwich smothered with peppers and onions. Rick and Kathy Parker recently blended their former hardware business with Mama Mitrione's, a deli and market named in honor of Rick's grandmother. The unique result is an old-fashioned mercantile store with a distinctive Italian accent. Located in Richmond's Historic Depot District, Parker's General Store is just across the street from the train station. You can spend hours browsing for everything from claw hammers to clothes to penny candies, and the store even boasts an authentic 1940s soda fountain where you can treat yourself to a milkshake or float. If you have the Wayne County Chocolate Trail passport, available at the Richmond Visitor Center on Old National Road, the fountain will dip you a free scoop of locally made Smith Dairy chocolate ice cream. The ice cream reminded us of exactly of the rich and creamy ice cream we grew up eating. But we dare you to leave without eating something from Maria Mitrione's, a part of the store where the deli case and hot bar offer a veritable festa of Italian meats, cheese, pasta dishes and desserts. Mangia!
