Nosh on pizza and drink in the friendly neighborhood vibe at Joe's Pizza in Richmond's Depot District.
Look for the huge, colorful mural depicting a landmark railroad station outside Joe's Pizza. Located in an 1800s building that was once a dry goods wholesale house, this casual pizza parlor is a popular gathering spot where shelves that used to hold zippers and thread now display vintage photos of the station and old-time memorabilia like glass milk bottles from a Richmond dairy. Joe's all-you-can-eat pizza buffet makes for a fine and inexpensive lunch or dinner; be sure to save room for the dessert pizza, a sweetly satisfying apple and caramel concoction. Also available are a variety of subs and pasta specialties, such as baked spaghetti and chicken fettuccini Alfredo. (The buffet runs $7.95 at dinner, and a la carte items usually cost even less.) On Friday and Saturday nights, when local entertainers tickle the ivories on an old upright piano, the crowd at Joe's is at its liveliest. Folks love to sing along with the jazz and swing tunes, and sometimes they even get up and dance. "If you walk in and don't know anybody, you'll have a friend by the time you leave," says owner Jason Whitney. The food here is not exactly spectacular, but it tastes OK and provides a good excuse for going to the happening Depot District and kicking back on a Friday night.
