Located on Detroit's new Riverwalk, Wheelhouse's citywide bicycle tours for all types of riders are addicting and inspiring, too.
On the banks of the Detroit River, in the shadow of General Motors headquarters, there's a small bike shop called Wheelhouse Detroit. In existence for about three years, Wheelhouse is run by Kelli and Karen, two Detroiters passionate about biking and sharing their city's gifts. In addition to a variety of guided tours, Wheelhouse also rents bikes by the hour -- perfect for a leisurely ride along the river. But the real star here are the tours (generally in the $35 range, bike included). The lineup varies month to month, but the schedule usually includes architecture, urban farming (that's the one we took, and it was fascinating), culinary adventures, and family tours. The tours also vary in terms of length and difficulty, but none are very challenging. Detroit is, after all, a fairly flat city. It's safe to say that there is a tour for just about any riding ability. Safety is paramount, and a "sweeper" rides behind to keep tabs on the group and check for any surprise repairs. Bicycles are large, comfortable, and in tip-top condition, providing an interesting way to see the hidden parts of a city that has a whole lot of empty space.
